Aeronautical tags are essential elements for the safety and maintenance of any aircraft. Although they may seem simple at first glance, these parts serve a critical function: identifying components, warning of hazards, indicating the condition of a part, or reminding you of pending maintenance tasks. But, like any other aeronautical component, they have a limited useful life and must be replaced when they no longer perform their function effectively.

In this article we are going to analyse when an aeronautical label should be changed, what factors influence its wear and tear and what technical criteria should be applied for its correct replacement.

What is an aeronautical label and why is it so important?

An aeronautical tag is a visual identification device that is temporarily or permanently attached to a component of the aircraft. These tags can contain warnings such as “Remove Before Flight”, identification codes, instructions for use, maintenance dates or even traceability elements using QR codes or RFID.

Its correct use:

  • Increases operational safety.
  • Reduce human error during maintenance.
  • Improves component traceability.
  • It facilitates compliance with aeronautical regulations (EASA, FAA, etc.).

When should an aeronautical label be replaced?

There is no single rule valid for all cases, but there are clear situations where the replacement of aeronautical labels is necessary:

  1. Visible physical impairment
    • Wear and tear due to frequent rubbing or handling.
    • Breakage, tearing, or loss of structural integrity.
    • Frayed edges or loose seams.
  2. Loss of readability
    • Erased ink, illegible text, or discoloration.
    • QR codes or barcodes that cannot be scanned.
    • Loss of contrast in indicative colors.
  3. Prolonged exposure to extreme conditions
    • Exposure to sun (UV), rain, salinity, or chemical agents.
    • Temperature changes that deteriorate the strength of the material.
  4. Changing the status of the tagged component
    • A warning label may become invalid after a repair.
    • Retired or upgraded components require a new ID.
  5. Scheduled Maintenance Review
    • During periodic inspections, the signalling elements are also checked.
    • If the useful life of the aeronautical labels has been exceeded, they must be replaced even if they appear to be in good condition.

What materials and regulations influence durability?

The durability of an aeronautical label depends largely on the type of material it is made of and its suitability for the operating environment.

  • Most common materials:
    • Technical polyester or reinforced vinyl.
    • Flexible PVC with UV treatment.
    • Embroidered flame retardant fabric (for fabric tags).
    • Anodized aluminum (permanent rigid labels).
  • Applicable regulations:
    • EASA Part-145 and FAA Advisory Circulars.
    • ATA Spec 100.
    • MIL-STD standards for military use.
    • Internal requirements of the aircraft operator or manufacturer.

These regulations specify, among other aspects, the requirements for resistance, visual identification, durability, fireproofing and coding.

Tips for good label maintenance management

The replacement of aeronautical labels must be part of the general maintenance plan of the aircraft. To do this, we recommend:

  • Document the condition of the labels in each inspection (visual, functional and reading).
  • Use certified suppliers and materials compatible with the aeronautical environment.
  • Always replace with models that are equivalent in format, size and resistance.
  • Avoid the use of labels that are not approved or made of inappropriate materials.
  • Opt for personalised labels or QR codes to improve the traceability and digitalisation of the process.
